Burning Smell or Buzzing Panel

A fishy or burning smell, a buzzing panel, warm outlets or scorched marks are urgent warning signs. Here's what to do right now — and what we do when we arrive.

Overheating electrical components have a distinct smell — often described as fishy or like burning plastic — because device insulation gives off that odor as it cooks. Combined with a buzzing breaker, a warm switch plate or discoloration around an outlet, it means a connection is failing and generating heat right now.

If the smell is strong or anything is hot to the touch: switch off the affected breaker (or the main if you can't tell), and call — this is what same-day emergency service is for. On arrival we thermally scan the panel and suspect devices, open up the overheated point, and repair the failed termination or replace the damaged device and any heat-affected wiring. We also check the rest of the circuit, because a connection that overheated once often has siblings installed the same way on the same run.

Frequently asked questions

What does an electrical fire smell like?
Most people describe overheating wiring as fishy, acrid or like burning plastic — the odor of insulation breaking down from heat. If the smell strengthens near an outlet, switch or the panel, treat it as urgent.
Is a buzzing breaker dangerous?
A faint hum under heavy load can be normal; a distinct buzz or crackle is not. It usually means arcing at a connection or a failing breaker — both worth an immediate look.
Should I shut off the power before you arrive?
If an outlet or device is hot, smells, or shows scorching — yes, turn off that breaker. If you can't identify the circuit and the smell is strong, shutting off the main and stepping outside is the safe call.
